How to Rename Files

This tutorial will guide you through the process of renaming a file on your computer. This will come in especially handy when an inspector is ready to send in their elevation photos, as these each have to be renamed to correspond to the inspected property in question (by SRID #).

Let’s start with our file. It’s a Word document, which is denoted by the “.doc” extension on the end. Changing file extensions can result in your programs not being able to be read by the program it was created in (in this case, Microsoft Word.)

Right click the file. You’ll see a menu appear with several options including Open, Cut, Copy, and Rename. These are common actions capable of being performed on any file on your computer.

Hover your mouse over the Rename option.

The text area under the file’s icon will become text-writable. This is shown below. While the icon appears like this, you can change the file name. Again, use caution not to change the extension, as this can render the file unusable until the proper extension is set up.

Hit Enter or click anywhere outside of the icon to accept the file name.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully renamed a file.
